SU's Summer Enrichment Academies Return for 2025

SALISBURY, MD---糖心视频’s Summer Enrichment Academies (SEA) return for 2025 with an expansive lineup of educational and entertaining opportunities for local youth. Registration is now open.

Each academy, geared toward elementary, middle and high school students, lasts five to 10 days. They include a series of topics that allow students to learn more about areas for which they have a passion from University faculty and industry experts. Academies held on SU’s main campus include “all-you-care-to-eat” lunch at the Commons dining hall unless otherwise noted.

Academies include:

•    Craft Time Designs (Grades 1-5), 9 a.m.-1 p.m. June 23-27: This academy offers a variety of creative craft activities such as painting, beading, weaving, clay and other projects. Students will work with the instructor and their peers to create exciting projects that they can keep. Cost is $325.

•    Future Mappers (Middle School), 1-4 p.m. June 23-27: This academy offers middle school students a hands-on introduction to real-world applications of mapping and technology. Students use tablets, field maps and drones to capture aerial imagery and create interactive story maps that integrate data with storytelling. They also have the opportunity to develop their story maps for Maryland’s statewide mapping competition, which awards prizes to middle and high school students. Lunch is not provided. Cost is $275.

•    Adaptive Sports Training (Grades 3-12), 9 a.m.-noon June 23-27: This academy provides local students with physical mobility disabilities and low vision/blindness opportunities an opportunity to develop their skills in preparation for competition in various adaptive sports. Lunch is not provided. Cost is $175.

•    Business Simulation (Middle and High School), 9 a.m.-1 p.m. June 23-27: In this academy, students have the opportunity to participate in active business simulation games engaging in and learning business activities and processes. On the last day of the academy, students present their projects to their families. Cost is $325.

•    Eastern Shore Writing Project: Young Writers Workshop (Grades 3-5), 9 a.m.-1 p.m. June 23-27: Students engage in the writing process to imagine, draft, revise and publish original compositions. Students participate in a variety of generative exercises aimed to jumpstart their writings and engage with peers within a workshop context. Cost is $325.

•    Comics (Grades 1-5), 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 7-11: Students will explore various techniques of self-expression through sequential storytelling, character creation and universe building. Techniques such as drawing, painting, collage and creative writing will be used to tell a story in visual form. Cost is $325. Students in this program also can register for the Games Academy for a full-day experience (see below).

•    Games (Grades 1-5), 1-4 p.m. July 7-11: Students explore various aspects of game creation. They create their own rules, cards, characters and gameboards. The students work in groups to play and test their creations and learn how game mechanics work. They use their imagination, problem-solving and team-building skills to create their games. Lunch is not provided for this academy; however, students in this program can register for the morning Comics Academy offered during this week (see above), and they will receive lunch through that program. Cost is $275. 

•    All About Health (Middle School), 9 a.m.-4 p.m. July 7-11: Students participate in hands-on activities related to the heart, lungs, muscles and mind. Students use health care tools as they discover everything that makes the human body so fascinating. Students practice skills like taking vital signs, assessing body movements and investigating cells with microscopes. Attendees spend a day at TidalHealth exploring in a health care hospital setting and interact with health and human services professionals. Cost is $500.

•    Paper Circuits (Middle School), 9 a.m.-4 p.m. July 7-11: From sketch to spark, students unleash their inner engineer with paper circuits. In this hands-on course, students explore the intersection of art, design and electrical engineering by creating functional paper circuits. Through guided projects, they learn the fundamentals of circuitry, conductivity, polarity and circuit design while crafting interactive projects like light-up greeting cards, 3D models and wearable tech. Cost is $325.

•    3D Printing Explorers (Middle and High School), 9 a.m.-noon July 7-11: Students are introduced to 3D printing through hands-on activities that blend creativity with technology. Students receive a live demonstration on how to use 3D pens. They then progress from tracing designs to creating their 3D objects while developing spatial reasoning and design skills. This academy takes place at SU Art Galleries Downtown and the Dave and Patsy Rommel Center for Entrepreneurship at SU Downtown. Lunch is not provided. Cost is $275.

•    Art and Nature (Grades 1-5), 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 14-18: Exploration and discovery on SU’s campus are central to the art-making techniques students explore. Students use a wide variety of mediums to express their connection with nature. Prints, pressings and paintings are used to replicate natural settings uniquely. The creation of birdhouses, wind-catchers, rock art and sun prints connect each student’s imagination with the outdoor world. Cost is $325.

•    Mixed Media Art (Grades 1-5), 1-4 p.m. July 14-18: Students explore a myriad of art-making techniques through the combination of painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, fibers and more. They express their personalities through unique artworks created in non-traditional ways. Working in groups, students collaborate and discover new ways to create. This academy will be in a studio, as well as outdoors. Lunch will not be provided; however, if students register for a whole-day option including the  Art and Nature Academy (see above) and arrive by 9 a.m., they will receive lunch. Cost is $275. 

•    Environmental Literacy Through Canoeing (Middle and High School), 9 a.m.-4 p.m. July 14-18: This academy informs and inspires students to learn more about the environment and global challenges through canoeing around the waterways of the Eastern Shore. Students learn how they can be a voice and find ways to help others understand global issues related to the watershed of the Chesapeake Bay. Cost is $500.

•    Scavenger Hunt (Middle School), 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 14-18: This academy provides many opportunities for team building, exercise and critical thinking as two teams of students search the SU campus for clues and hidden objects. Activities include finding a crashed alien spacecraft, stopping a zombie outbreak and discovering clues to Medusa’s lair. Teams are led by instructors and teaching assistants to ensure students navigate the campus safely. Cost is $325.

•    Orchestra (Middle and High School), 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 14-18: Students play in both orchestra and small ensembles comprised of string, brass, wind and percussion instruments. They perform in a supportive environment and have an opportunity to work on their rhythmic and listening skills through sessions in a percussion studio and piano lab. Cost is $325.

•    We Read to Lead Book Club (Grades 3-5), 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 14-18: Students enjoy the opportunity to read books with their peers and discuss what they have read. They engage in activities based on the theme of the books that they share, reading a different picture book each day. This experience allows them to improve their literacy skills, participate in critical thinking exercises and enjoy social interaction with their peers. Cost is $325.

•    Creative Writing for Teens (Grades 8-12), 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 21-25: This academy encourages students to use their imagination and self-expression to develop their writing skills. While developing stories and learning about different forms of writing, students improve their language, grammar and creative thinking. They also have the opportunity to share their thoughts and opinions with their peers. Cost is $325.

•    Outdoor Leadership and Team Building (Middle School) 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 21-25; (Elementary School) 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 28-August 1: This academy teaches and improves skills such as kayaking, hiking, backpacking and decision-making. The students learn how to navigate potentially challenging situations and communicate effectively with their peers, and develop leadership skills while enjoying nature. They also learn about the importance of respecting the environment and basic first aid and outdoor safety. Cost is $325.

•    STEAM (Grades 1-5) 9 a.m.-4 p.m. July 21-25; (Middle School)9 a.m.-4 p.m. July 28-August 1: This academy focuses on science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) activities. Each day, students engage in STEAM activities that encourage them to use their critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration skills, building their confidence and observation skills. Cost is $500.

•    Live Action Film (Grades 3-6) 9 a.m.-4 p.m. July 21-25; (Grades 7-10) 9 a.m.-4 p.m. July 28-August 1: SU’s May Literacy Center Film Academy will be “lights up” with young filmmakers working together to produce their visions on screen. The live-action filmmaking portion allows students to write, produce and act in short films. Learners engage in storyboarding, script writing, filming and video editing with the latest software. At the end of the program, students showcase their short films to friends and family. Cost is $500.

•    Local Tours (Grades 6-9), 9 a.m.-4 p.m. July 21-25: Through this academy, students visit area museums and historical sites, learning about the events and people who helped build local communities. Sites include SU’s Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture, the Delmarva Discovery Center, the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Museum, Furnace Town and SU’s Museum of Eastern Shore Culture. Cost is $325.

•    College and Career Readiness Bootcamp (Grades 9-12), 9 a.m.-4 p.m. July 28-August 1: This academy provides enrichment activities designed to prepare high school students with the skills they need to smoothly transition to college or the workplace after they graduate. Cost is $500.

•    Social Engagement Skills (Elementary School) 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 28-August 1; (Middle School) 1-4 p.m.: This academy teaches students to interact effectively with others using skills such as active listening, verbal and non-verbal communication, conflict resolution, empathy and respect to help them be successful in school and life. Students practice giving instructions, following directions, and giving and receiving constructive criticism. They also learn social etiquette skills such as making eye contact, manners, respecting others and their personal space, and other skills that ensure successful daily interactions. Cost is $325 for elementary school students, $275 for middle school students. Lunch is not provided for the middle school program.
